After about 24 years of smoking,i decided to give up over 9 weeks ago now.Its not been easy.I went down the cold turkey route,no patches, chewing gum, inhiliators, group therapy, acupuncture, hypnososis, you name it i didnt try it.My reasons were my health and money, its £6.20 for 20 cigarettes in the UK ($10 USA) and i was smoking about 30 a day, also not working is a good motivator,i simply dont have money to burn.

I do feel my health has improved alot,no wheezy lungs in the morning, little or no coughing up half your lungs at regular intervals,my skin colour of my face is no longer a grey/whitish palour, the house doesnt stink anymore, also my appetite has returned,im eating like i used to and put on some weight,so on the whole i do feel a lot better.

I know im not "cured" as even though all the nicotine is out my system i do have moments when i want a smoke, ive just been taking it one craving at a time and saying NO to the demons, and people that have partners that smoke,it is an addiction,a very real and physical addiction, support them any way you can, food and drink helps, lol, but not too excess,i was 40 on my last birthday and just thought enough was enough and so far im off them, cold turkey worked for me as i'd never really tried before, just thought i'd tell any fellow quitters or looking to quit, you can do it,one craving at a time, they do come but less and less frequently now, cheers,Mark.

Great! Although it wasn't really spontaneous, you got my respect. It's hard to change habits without help, especially if you feel as an addict.

Congrats at giving up such an addicting habit, and best of luck to you at staying away from it. I almost wish video games caused health problems so there would be reason to run from them as well ;)

Well done, cold turkeys the only way. I have'nt smoked for 15 years (apart from when I get nailed by a Bot grenade) though after a few pints of 'heavy' I could kill one;)

The hardest part (after the initial cravings) is the 4 to 6 month time frame. Studies show that most people who manage to quit go back to the cancer sticks after about 6 months. Hang in there!

Good job Tea, myself I've been smoking since I was 8 years old, yes I said 8, and I've tried to quit about 3 times in all the years and I found it's really hard for me to do, when I was in the hospital for a week they tried the patches, but it just didn't do any damn good, I was hard to get along with I snapped at everyone, I guess I'll still smoke until they lay me out.

On a humor side of it.
I've always said if I quit smoking today, tomorrow I get hit by a tobacco truck, so tobacco will still kill me.

But Tea, I give you credit for completing the hardest task to do, stopping a bad habit

I tried quiting cold turkey but i could'nt handle it i got the cold sweats and a bad case of the nervis shakes, So i finally decided to try Chantix, Since then i've been smoke free for the last 2 ½ years.

And no i did'nt have any thoughts of suicide nor did i have any strange dreams like they say you may experience on Chantix.

As my dad used to say, "Quitting smoking is easy, I do it all the time."

Not me - so my hat's off to all of you who have managed to kick this disgusting habit. I've tried a couple times, but if you think I'm grouchy now . . . . .

Great Job. Keep it up.
I quite myself 3 years ago December. After 20 plus years and a habit of 20-30 cancer sticks a day. I still get the urge from time to time. I guess the old saying is right once an addict always an addict. Your best bet is to stay away from alcohol, and others that still smoke. Thats my 2 cents.

Good deal. I quit using skoal/copenhagen for five years but started again after some long term exposure from co workers, Stay away from smokers all your urges now are psychological after being this far out. Wish you continued succes!

I remember when I quit. I lived with two other people that smoked at least a pack a day, and I was the night manager at an auto parts store. Very stressful. Mind over matter. You can do anything you want to do. The only time I even took a drag of one after that was a deal I made with a girl because I got to watcher her do something very fascinating with the shift lever or my MR2. Aside from that, I still get a mental reminder every now and then that I would like one, but all I have to do is take as deep of a breath as possible and just hold it. It feels great. You can actually feel your lungs getting all the air they've been wanting for years.

I had smoked for five years, started when I was 18, and quit when I was 23. It's been about 2.5 years. Of course... I DID gain about 60 pounds... but being 6' 2" and weighing 125 pounds wasn't really a good thing.

Oh... and I also quit drinking the same time I quit smoking. Talk about hell....
