OK, I'm not a major gamer or anything, so excuse this question. Just how does Ventrilo work? What do I need to use it, etc. Is it just get a headset and plug it in, or do I need additional software, or what? I am seriously considering starting to use it and I need any and all info about it....Thanks in advance...

You need the Ventrilo Software, a Headset with Microphone and a soundcard with mic-in (should have every soundcard, the red one).

ventrilo is a free down load all you have to do is google ventrilo and you can download it free. most computers, I believe, have what it takes to run ventrilo so that shouldn't be a problem. than you will need a head set with a mic they are fairly cheep at the ones I was looking at the other day. than after you down load the free ventrilo you will need the port number. when you get in you may have a little bit of time figuring out how to set your binds and everything but those on vent will help or you can post in the forums for help. one thing to remember when starting is to set your bind (which is your key or mouse or what ever butten you want to push in order to talk) than you may have to go into setup click on binds and click on headset and apply. it doesn't take much and it is a lot of fun. hope to see you on soon.

I would love to join you guys on vent but I play while my wife and 4 month old son are sleeping. Let's just say he doesn't need any extra reasons to wake up at 2 or so in the morning!

Does it matter if its a USB plug or does it have to be the kind that goes into the mic jack?

I use a headset with the two round connectors, red and black, with no apparent problems. A $10 purchase about 5 years ago. Being on ventrilo even just to listen helps the team also with more effective communications :)

If anyone wants to know the cheapest way to have vent in the game, all you need to do is just buy a mic. I've seen the mics that sit on a base go for 4 or 5 dollars. You can find a spot to put it, adjust your game volumes, vent volumes, and mic volume where you can talk through the mic (thats sits on a base) and you can listen to everyone on vent through your pc speakers. When I was in a BF '42 clan, this was the way I did it, and it worked fine for me. In fact, I was doing this way before battlefield 1942 when I use to play the OLD tom clancy games online. Your still better off spending $10-15 on a headset with mic, but I figured I would mention it for those without a money tree. :D

For those who would rather listen to vent, well you can set vent up where you hear everyone through your pc speakers. If you play with the volumes, you can even out the game volume with the vent volume. The only time its a problem is when someone is way to loud or when someone is not loud enough. I still would recommend the headset with mic. Its the best way to go!

I use the headset with mic that connects to the sound card, but I would rather use my usb headset w/mic.

Hey guano, when you use your usb headset, are you able to listen to the game through you pc speaks, and then hear everyone on vent on your headset. This is the problem I had with the USB headset. I would hear both the game and people on vent through my USB headset. I could never get it where I would hear the game through my pc speakes and everyone on vent through the headset. I would even be happy if I could use the mic from the USB headset, and then hear both the game and everyone on vent through my pc speaks, as this is how my mic that hooks through sound card works. Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

"The only time its a problem is when someone is way to loud or when someone is not loud enough"

Some TEAM members were showing me recently - Individual volumes can be set on vent by right clicking their name / miscellaneous / special effects. Move volume to the left column, then double click it I think. Think must exit to vent main before change takes effect.

Ok, new problem....I can talk on voice activated no problem. The problem I have is I dont always want everyone to hear what I say (I cuss a lot during my game ;)) I have tried to activate the push to talk function but am having no luck. Could someone walk me through the process?

Dredd, if u use a mouse to play bf2 on your laptop, try this. If your mouse has a button on the side, use it.You can set this button up in the setup menu, under push to talk. I think you left click on it, and then click the key, or button you want to use. Hope this help you.

Once you get used to using push to talk you might find, as I have, that it becomes so automatic that you also push to cuss. DAMN! (Did I type that out loud?)

yeah that's me Mrs. Bossy :) glad I could help. just a heads up for anyone using vista you most likely will have to right click on the icon on your desk top and run as administrator. the other thing you most likely will have to do is right click, select properties click on compatibility and check the box that says run as administrator on mine it is one of the last ones.
