PR is Project Reality - a fairly popular mod for BF2. You can download it here:

To join a custom map game - not a mod (modification) game - you simply need to have the custom maps being played installed in your BF2 "Levels" folder. All the maps running in our custom game should be available in the downloads section. There's lots of posts available in the forums on how to install them

As Kilemal pointed out, Project Reality is a Mod for BF2 while Custom is a series of new maps for BF2. Custom has the same weapons and "rules" as vanilla BF2, just different terrain. Mods on the other hand change all the "rules" and usually have very different weapons and ways of doing things.

As for Project Reality Mod, personally I think it's one of the best mods out there for BF2. Word of caution, it does have a steeper learning curve than Vanilla BF2 or AIX. Lots of things work differently in PR than in other mods.

For instance, you lose the cross hairs on the screen along with messages telling you if you killed your target (except in the case of a TK) Unless your in a vehicle, you also don't have a mini map or the flag status bars. It also takes more than one person to take a flag in the Advance And Secure game mode (PR's version of conquest).

As far as PR game play goes, it's less about shooting and more about strategy, tactics and team work. Fire fights take place at longer distances and are slower compared to BF2 or other Mods.

Flying helicopters or planes in PR is not for the feint of heart. Helicopters and planes take special kits to fly them and also take 30 seconds to "warm up" before you can take off. Crashing (very easy to do) or getting shot down (even easier) will cost you lots of teamwork points. (I think it's like -80 team work points for crashing)

There are also some really cool things that are not in BF2, such as the Squad Leader's ability to "deploy" assets like Forward Outposts, Heavy Machine Gun nests and TOW or Stinger missile emplacements, fox holes and my personal favorite, Barb Wire Fences to create defensive fortifications.

The biggest draw for me in PR is the team work and strategy needed to win.

Hope you download it and give it a try. One thing, be SURE to read the manual available on the PR site or you will fell totally lost when you try to play.
