Hopefully I can stop wasting so much time trying to keep the game server from crashing, and concentrate on having some fun. The time has come for Family Day 2010 !
Events will include the ever popular Buggy Races, Knife Fight, Demolition Derby, Helicopter Skill, and for the first time - Parachute Skill.
I need to decide which day is best to do this based on which day the most people can attend. Vote for the day, or days, you would be able to participate and we'll see when it happens.

I have voted for all 3 as I am not bother what day it is held. My life is like an open book, it collects dust, it is never read and has a few coffee and tea stains on it. :D:D:D:D:D

As was the case during the last event, Trap and I will be recording (and hopefully not losing this time) all the events from the air. I am going to ask, and yes require if necessary, that the entire map for the duration of this event be a "No Fly" zone, based upon the extremely high occurance of air to air collisions during the last event, which resulted in many of the events not being recorded at all.
There will be a transport chopper available for those who wish to spectate or record from the air, but aside from the one spectator aircraft all other aircraft will remain on the ground. There are plenty of good vantage points on the map for everyone to make their own recordings of the events and ample time will be given to everyone to position themselves accordingly.

what maps are you using for this fun day event!!!!
Might I suggest a map? Kubra Dam 64. Has all the equipment and lots of cool obstacles. Also add the following event. F-15 course (Take off, fly under bridge, then thru upper part of dam, strafe the MEC planes, back under dam via the pipe and bridge, fly the canyon then a 180 and land at US airbase. The judge can ride in the back and score the flight. Similar course for the cobra with more killing of vehicles along the way with the 2.75" rockets Have to kill all targets and only on one load of rockets. Fastest time wins, 20 second penalty for each missed target. Again the judge rides gunner.
HALO parachute drop from a hovering blackhawk, judge is on the ground, lowest opening (try to open below the top of the flag pole) and closest to flag. Also HAHO event, Chopper over dam and glide all the way to the flag between sheds and bridge. (can't remember the flag name) Again, the closest to the flag is the winner.
How about a Sniper competition? Contestants on runway at us air base. Targets at 400 and 600 meters up on the hills south of the base. 20 shots (10 on each) Most hits wins and head shots should count double. (Target should be a medic with another medic/squad leader spawn point near by)
Any other ideas?

Well - it's looking like Sunday, June 13th is going to be the big day. The planned - or possible events for the day are as follows:
Definite events:
Buggy Race
Knife Fight
Buggy Demolition Derby
Sniper Competition
Parachute Skills
Aircraft Skills - This will be either an airplane (F-15 or F/A-18) or helo (UH-60) skills competition, depending upon how many people are interested in each. I offered an airplane competition last year but only two people signed up for it, so it got scrapped.
The map used in the event will be announced the day before.

That new custom map "Volcano Valley" would be good for buggy/air races

I've been thinking about one of the new events this year - the sniper competition. I was picking trap off at 400 meters pretty easily, although at that distance I could not actually see his figure, but I could see the squad emblem over his head. I was able to use that to pretty quickly determine how high over his apparent location I needed to shoot to score a hit.
Unfortunately, the graphics on this pc are not that great, I know most gamers have better, and sadly I also know that some people here have worse. Those of you who snipe a lot (definitely not me) could maybe help out here by letting me know if this is a fair distance for a competition, hopefully without giving an unfair advantage to those with better hardware ? ? ?

As for sniping your best bet is on AIX2 as the viewing distance on some maps is infinite!!!! the ones that are restricted are set to 600 metres.
I know this as when we played Falklands on 32 size I got a 607 metre kill and I could not see him.
Also to note is the fact no one will be flying so it will not put added pressure on graphics cards to show those details.
Get everyone to play greasy mullet on AIX if it plays ok for them then that is a good map to go for as it has infinite view distance.

Unfortunately, the view distance the map is set for actually has nothing to do with an individual pc's ability to render objects at that distance. Many times when I'm flying the chopper my gunner will be screaming: "AA right, AA right!" but I can't see it because it's beyond what my video can handle, yet the other guy sees it fine. Once it fires at us I will see the smoke trails from the rockets leading back to its location, but still won't actually see the vehicle.
Thats what I'm getting at here . . . .
Is 400 meters too much, not enough . . . . just right ?

what time are you thinking of kicking the festivities off?

well i know that too short of a distance wouldnt be fair to the real good snipers out there. If someones machine cant handle it then their technically limited as a sniper. i kno because until recently (ie about 2 weeks ago) my visibility was only about 350 meters in game. if we're going to go that route then i suggest maybe marksmanship contest with shorter distance(200-400m) maybe with lots of targets and focus on fastest time to eliminate all targets, and then a sniper competition with longer (600m+) with a focus more on a small amount of targets in the least amount of shots with less focus on time, we could finagle in moving targets where they start at preplanned stationary spots (ie flags, rocks, etc) and walk (not run because of the variables there) to other stationary spots

We thank you for all your suggestions and keep them coming but I also want to remind you all that in doing so you need to remember that this is
Family Fun Day
Not individual fun day of what you can do. (Just using this as an example no other way intended) maybe 4 0r 5 people can see 615m so that will limit the competition to just them and with that I see no family sport there were as you put it at 400 you’ll have 10 trying out. I think in the sniping 400 will be fine just my thoughts (my video card lets me see farther then that) Then at the end of the compation you can have the longest shot contest.

Yea thats what i said, my thing is alot of our snipers are good and to be honest 400m wont be enough pressure, especially on unmoving targets, there will be no victor because everyone will probably get them all thats why i suggested timed and moving targets at 400m and accuracy at 600m+

I was afraid of that, but I'd like to hear from a few more people before making a final decision here. If I can't see a target at 400m because of my hardware, but others can see effectively at 600m, then I don't really see anyway to have a fair competition. It would be basically just a competition to see who has the best computer, not who's the best shot.

Yeah I was thinking along those lines too HardShooters rather than go for the long distance go for the mid range and for Accuracy and Precision. That way people with lesser machines are on a par with those having more powerful machines.
Also on a fun note the parachute comps have one for the "Hell's Fliers" they are a small group of mad people that open their shute's as late as possible, it's as funny as hell to watch.
A few players were doing this on Easter Island on AIX it's great fun to watch and even more fun to try!!!

400m should be plenty far enough. I bet that there would be few 100% shooters at 300m stationary targets. Moving targets at 200-300m spells extra fun :)

Any idea at what time it's going to start? Does there exist a time schedule to check my possible participations?

I'm going to give this poll two more days for everyone to vote, then the day will be final and we'll start working on events and event times.
